 a strange irregular noise  appears from the burner: semi-creak, semi-knock on metal.
what is it?

Could it be the cover over the burner resonating?

The way the fan speed is regulated is by pulsing 230v to the fan, and that makes a slight "tuk-tuk" sound, and that sometime plants itself in the cover over the burner.

Could be the internal auger cutting pellets in half. That sounds like crushing and then a small knock... it's very normal... especially if the pellets are very hard pressed.
